Every page of Robot+Girl, Itasha Idols, and The Wonderland Trials is created with human artists doing all the work: roughing out pages, solving compositions, drawing characters, inking, coloring, and eventually turning into something we’re willing to send to the printer.
From Scribbles to Finished Art
Mike White draws the production artwork for our comics, beginning with loose roughs that establish the composition, characters, action, and storytelling of each page.
From there, those rough drawings are refined into the clean finished line art you see in the books.
The images in this post show both stages side-by-side: the original working drawings and the finished line art created from them.
Then Comes Color
Once the line art is complete, our colorist Valery Kuts takes over.
Val brings another entire layer of artistry to the page, building color, atmosphere, lighting, depth, and mood.
We’ve shared some of Val’s process on social media before, and the videos below give you a look at her working directly on RobotGirl Studios artwork.
The finished comics you read are the product of artists making creative decisions at every stage.
Our production artwork is human-created.
So Where Does AI Fit In?
RobotGirl Studios does use generative AI tools in our marketing and promotional work.
Our starting point is always the original artwork.
AI tools may be used to help adapt that material for promotional purposes. Sometimes we extend an existing background when artwork needs to fit a different canvas, accommodating a new aspect ratio or orientation for social media.
Also, A.R.R.A. has been having entirely too much fun transforming static artwork into animated video content and promos.
AI-assisted promotional material is just that:
Promotional material to feed the social media machine.
It is not a substitute for the production artwork in our comics.
