RobotGirl Studios: Behind the Scenes — Come Make Some Comics With Me
Ever wonder what actually goes into making an indie comic?
Not just the finished pages and shiny covers—but the drawing, rewriting, deadlines, printing, promotion, retailer stuff, late nights, mistakes, and all the other weird little things that happen between “I have an idea” and “Hey, there’s my comic on a store shelf!”
Well, I thought it might be fun to show you.
Today I’m launching RobotGirl Studios: Behind the Scenes, a new video journal following the day-to-day process of making comics here at RobotGirl Studios.
Three times a week, I’ll be opening up the studio and showing you what I’m actually working on.
That could mean drawing pages for Robot+Girl, working on the next Itasha Idols, building the world of The Wonderland Trials, designing characters and robots, getting books ready for print, preparing retailer promotions, packing orders, unboxing, livestreaming commissions—or discovering that the thing I thought would take twenty minutes has somehow consumed my entire afternoon.
In other words: the good, the bad, and the occasionally ridiculous parts of trying to make comics for a living.
A Different Kind of Behind the Scenes
I don’t want this to be a polished documentary about making comics.
I want it to feel more like you pulled up a chair next to my drawing desk to see what I’m working on that day.
Some episodes will show you artwork that’s still being created. Some will take you through how a comic goes from an idea to a finished book. Others might be about publishing, comic shops, conventions, promotion, or whatever unexpected problem has landed on my desk that week.
And because you’re seeing these projects while they’re actually being made, you’ll get to follow them from rough sketches and half-finished pages all the way to the comics you can eventually hold in your hands.
New Videos Every Monday, Wednesday & Friday
I’ll be posting a new RobotGirl Studios: Behind the Scenes video every Monday, Wednesday and Friday here and on YouTube so you can follow along there if you like as well.
The episodes will be short, so you won’t need to sit through a 30-minute documentary every time you want to see what’s happening around here. Think of them as little snapshots from the studio throughout the week.
And this is just the beginning.
As the series develops, I’d love to show more of the entire indie-comics process—not only how I make the books, but what happens after I finish drawing them.
So if you’ve ever wondered what it’s actually like to write, draw, publish and promote independent comics come along with me on the journey to one day paying the rent!
Welcome to The Studio.
Let’s make some comics.
