Robot+Girl #13 Is Here! Let’s Open the Box
There are a lot of milestones that happen while making a comic, but there’s something particularly satisfying about the day when a box shows up at your door and the thing you’ve been staring at on a computer screen is suddenly a real comic book.
That’s what today’s episode of RobotGirl Studios: Behind the Scenes is all about.
A fresh shipment of Robot+Girl #13 just arrived from the printer, so I’m cracking open the box and taking a first look at the finished books—and the new variant covers.
From the Drawing Tablet to a Real Comic
By the time a finished issue arrives, I’ve already spent countless hours with these pages.
I’ve written them. Drawn them. Revised them. Stared at them at ridiculous magnifications looking for things that need fixing. Prepared the files for print. Looked at the covers over and over again.
But all of that happens digitally.
Opening that box is the moment when it finally stops being a collection of files on my computer and becomes something you can actually pick up, flip through and put on a comic shop shelf.
And after all this time, that feeling still hasn’t gotten old.
Three Covers, One Robot+Girl
For Robot+Girl #13, we’ve got multiple covers, each giving the issue a very different look.
That’s one of the things I enjoy about doing variant covers. The story inside might be the same, but each cover gets to approach the characters and world from a different direction.
In the video, I’ll show you the new covers up close, including the finished printed versions fresh out of the box.
And naturally, I want to know which one you would grab off the shelf.
Which Robot+Girl #13 cover is your favorite?

This Is What “Behind the Scenes” Is All About
When I started RobotGirl Studios: Behind the Scenes, this was exactly the kind of thing I wanted to document.
Making comics isn’t only sitting at a drawing tablet.
It’s everything that happens between the first sketch and that box landing on the doorstep: writing, drawing, revisions, deadlines, printing, promotion, working with comic shops, shipping books—and occasionally wondering why I thought making comics was a sensible way to spend my life.
So rather than only showing you the finished product, I want to bring you along while all of that is actually happening.
Some days we’ll be drawing.
Some days we’ll be designing characters.
Some days we’ll be trying to get a new book ready for comic shops.
And some days…
WE OPEN BOXES.
